    Service Projects

Throughout the year the Peer Leaders coordinate and participate in a huge variety of community service projects.  At the WYC we are committed to making a positive difference in the world and encouraging our peers to so the same. If you are interested in doing something good for others, stop by the WYC to find out how you can get involved.

    Relay for Life

    6:00pm Saturday, June 16th to 6:00am Sunday, June 17th
    Location: To Be Determined

Relay For Life is the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.   Each year, more 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additio...nal communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Community members form teams of 8-15 people in honor or in memory of people who have battled cancer. Each team has at least one representative on the track at all times throughout the 12 hour event.

WHS students from the Winchester Youth Center and Connect & Commit have partnered with the American Cancer Society to create the first annual Relay For Life of Winchester. Our goal is to bring community members of all ages together to raise money for the American Cancer Society, raise awareness of cancer, and honor all of the Winchester residents who have battled this disease.

Our initial proposal to hold our Relay on Manchester Field has been rejected by the Winchester Town Manager’s office so our location for the first annual Relay For Life of Winchester is yet to be determined but we are not going to be deterred.

For more information or to register visit the Relay for life page.

    Youth Service Day

    • non-perishable food collection
    • making scarves and hats for the homeless
    • collecting items to send to the troops
    • Aberjona clean-up
    • planting and beautification

This amazing community service event is open to all middle and high school students and we encourage everyone to participate and learn how much fun it is to do something good!
Students can register at the WYC or in the Connect & Commit office. Adults are also invited to participate. Please contact the WYC if you want to get involved.

ALS COMMUNITY OF HOPE: Haley’s Comets

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a cause that the WYC cares about.  There is no known cure for the disease and the life expectancy after diagnosis is 3-5 years.

Please support our efforts to defeat ALS a.k.a. Lou Gehrig's Disease. We have created "Haley's Comets", a Community of Hope Fund at http://web.alsa.org/goto/haleyscomets. Our goal is to raise money to support people in our community with ALS and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatment and a cure for this disease. Please join our team at the North Shore Walk to Defeat ALS in Wakefield on Saturday, October 15th. Contact us at the WYC to learn more about how you can get involved.

    Boston Cares

Boston Cares organizes and leads team oriented volunteer opportunities throughout Greater Boston that have a positive impact on individuals and communities. Following the amazing experiences that we had volunteering with Greater Philadelphia Cares while on our Habitat trip last April that included planting urban community gardens, working with kids at an inner-city camp, and volunteering at a food bank; the Peer Leaders have joined up with Boston Cares to participate in monthly service projects here in our own city.

    Making Strives Against Breast Cancer

The Peer Leaders are organizing a team to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Boston on October 3rd.
Please contact us to find out how you can join our team and/or make a donation to this tremendous cause for the American Cancer Society.

    Fall Cleaning Collections

Fall is a great time to clean out your closets and pantries and donate your unwanted items to those in need. The Peer Leaders are collecting the following items to local organizations: non-perishable foods, lightly used pots & pans, jeans & sweatshirts, winter jackets & outerwear, baby gear, clean cotton bath towels, laundry detergent, and new dog & cat toys. Please stop by the WYC any day from 2:00-5:00 to drop off any of these items or give us a call and we'll come pick them up from your home.

    Lowell Wish Project

The Lowell Wish Project provides emergency, basic, and seasonal goods to low income families in the Merrimack Valley.
The Peer Leaders volunteer several times throughout the school-year sorting and organizing donated items at their warehouse facility.
During the week of October 4-8 we will be collecting the following items:
    • pots & pans
    • jeans and sweatshirts for school-aged children
    • baby gear

We respectfully request that all items be in new/lightly used condition.
Please bring items to the WYC any day from October 4-8 between 2:00-5:30pm.
