Habitat for Humanity - Almost Heaven, West Virginia

Over April vacation of 2012 we will be going to Almost Heaven, West Virginia.  During our trip we will be building homes as one essential element in a broad campaign to eliminate substandard housing in the area and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.  For fundraising, we are selling raffle tickets and dump runs.  Each raffle ticket will cost twenty dollars; they give all participants a chance to win an iPad 2, a 4-pack of red Sox tickets, and a live performance by the famed Devil Dogs.  Dump Runs will cost $10 and the dump run itself will be held on Saturday, March 17th.  If you are unable to find a peer leader email us at rebeccaslevine@gmail.com.  Help us help people!

    Habitat for Humanity

Our experience and participation with Habitat for Humanity has come to represent exactly what our Peer Leadership program is all about: teamwork, group-bonding, and service-learning.
This year during April vacation members of the Peer Leadership group will embark on our 6th annual week-long Habitat for Humanity trip. We will once again participate in the amazing experience of helping to build homes for families in need. Each year we pick a different area of the country and travel there to volunteer with the local HfH affiliate.

Our previous trips have been to:

    -Salem County, New Jersey
    -Taos, New Mexico
    -Mobile, Alabama
    -Beaumont, Texas
    -Eastern Shore of Virginia
    -Erie, Pennsylvania

Each year has provided a new and unique experience allowing us to learn about different regions and the struggles that people are facing. We have also learned a wide range of home-building techniques including:

    -building a foundation
    -putting in insulation
    -home framing
    -putting up drywall
    -doing vinyl siding
    -roofing
    -hurricane protection
    -yard grading
    -building an entire sidewalk

Each trip has also allowed us to learn so much about ourselves and what we are capable of individually and as a team. Each day we challenge ourselves to work hard for the benefit of others and later we reflect back on all that we've accomplished. We also have a ton of fun!

    Fundraising

Each year we work to fundraise all of the expenses for this trip including a substantial donation to the HfH affiliate to help pay for building expenses.
Throughout the Fall and Winter the Peer Leaders will organize a variety of fundraising events and projects including:

    -Halloween Party Coffee House
    -Jewelry & Craft Sales

    -Dump Runs
    -Raffle Ticket Sales
-Drop & Shop: Activity Night for elementary school kids so parents can go holiday shopping

Please contact us to find out more about any of these fundraisers or to make a donation toward this amazing service-learning experience.
